Proper nutrition is one of the most important factors that influence the health and wellbeing of pets (besides genetics, exercise, love and cuddles). A healthy and balanced nutrition will go a long way in keeping them healthy, physically and mentally fit, disease free and even live longer. Sadly, not all of the thousands of dog food brands available in the market today are healthy or balanced.
The aim of this app is to equip dog owners with the knowledge that will help them determine the nutritional requirements of their dogs, understand the basic requirements of a healthy and balanced diet, and, to select the right food for their dogs by using their own informed judgement rather than rely on the marketing tactics of the dog food manufacturers, who may not have the same interests at heart. The app does not recommend any specific brand over another but gives the users the knowledge to make that call by themselves.
The easy to use app has several features that enable dog owners to
determine the unique nutritional requirements of their dogs;
calculate the digestible energy in their food and the correct amounts to feed;
evaluate the muscle mass and body fat levels of the dogs to determine if they are of a healthy size and to help them achieve the healthy size through proper nutrition;
select the right dog food based on the quality and appropriateness of different foods available;
understand basic facts about canine nutrition so they can make informed decisions when it comes to choosing a food; and,
learn about the commonly used dog food ingredients and their appropriateness.
Some points to bear in mind
Each dog is unique and have different metabolic rates – the energy requirement and the feeding quantity calculated by the app must be used as a guideline. Start with the figures calculated by the app, adjusting it as needed after 1 month to achieve the desired results (Body Condition Score of 3).
For pregnant or lactating females, consult with the veterinarian before making any changes to their diet.
Body Condition Score, rather than weight, is an ideal measure to check if your dog is of the right size. Aim to achieve and maintain a Body Condition Score of 3.

Your Dog’s Energy Requirement
Here you can calculate the daily energy requirements (DER) of your dog in calories. This is the number of calories your dog needs daily to sustain itself. An ideal nutrition plan should deliver the same number of calories as the DER. Any excess calories may lead to obesity and weight gain, while a shortage of calories may lead to malnutrition.
Energy in Food
In this section you can calculate the Metabolisable Energy (ME) in various dog food brands by entering the nutrient values found in the packaging. Although some dog food manufacturers publish the ME in the packaging, not all do. By calculating the ME, the app then calculates the quantity of each food to feed daily or per serving, so ME in food consumed is equal to the dog’s DER.
Body Condition Scoring
The Body Condition Scoring (BCS) is a simple technique to measure your dog’s muscle and fat mass. The App uses a 5-tier rating, with the ideal rating being 3, a lower rating indicating underweight and a higher rating indicating overweight. For a dog to be happy and healthy, it is recommended that a BCS score of 3 is maintained.
